Synonymes, anaphores, métaphores — writing like a French essayist
At B2, your writing needs to go beyond correct grammar — it needs style. This means avoiding repetition (synonymes), creating rhythm (anaphores), and adding imagery (métaphores). These are the tools that turn a homework essay into a piece that a French reader would actually enjoy.
Synonymes — avoid repetition
Never use the same key word twice in a paragraph. Build a synonym chain.
- Ce problème → cette difficulté → cet obstacle → ce défi — This problem → this difficulty → this obstacle → this challenge
- Les jeunes → la jeunesse → les nouvelles générations → les adolescents — Young people → youth → new generations → teenagers
Anaphores — create rhythm
Repeating the same word or structure at the start of consecutive sentences creates emphasis and power.
- Il faut agir. Il faut changer. Il faut oser. — We must act. We must change. We must dare.

Métaphores — add imagery
A metaphor replaces a literal statement with an image that's more vivid and memorable.
- La ville est un organisme vivant. — The city is a living organism. (not literally)
- Internet est une jungle d'informations. — The internet is a jungle of information.
- Ce livre m'a ouvert les yeux. — This book opened my eyes.
