The conditionnel présent lets you talk about what you WOULD do, what you WOULD LIKE, and what COULD happen. It's the tense of dreams, polite requests, and 'what if' scenarios. You already know 'je voudrais' from ordering in cafés — now learn the full system.
How to form the conditionnel
Take the future stem of the verb (the infinitive for regular verbs, or the irregular future stem) and add the IMPARFAIT endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. That's it — future stem + imparfait endings = conditionnel.

Common irregular stems (same as futur simple)
The same verbs that are irregular in the future keep the same irregular stem in the conditionnel.

When to use the conditionnel
The conditionnel has four main uses in everyday French: polite requests, wishes/dreams, suggestions, and hypothetical situations with 'si'.
- Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît. — I would like a coffee, please. (polite request)
- J'aimerais voyager au Japon. — I would love to travel to Japan. (wish)
- Tu pourrais m'aider ? — Could you help me? (suggestion)
- Si j'avais le temps, je ferais du sport. — If I had time, I would do sports. (hypothetical)
« Je ___ voyager en Italie cet été. » (would like)
Si j'___ riche, j'achèterais une maison. (être — imparfait)
Tu ___ m'aider avec mes devoirs ? (pouvoir — conditionnel)
