L'impératif

giving commands and instructions

What you’ll learn

The imperative lets you give instructions, orders, advice, or invitations: 'Écoute !', 'Regardez !', 'Mangeons !'. It only has three forms, and it looks almost like the present tense — minus the subject pronoun.

Explanation

Three forms

Start from the present tense 'tu', 'nous', or 'vous' form and drop the subject.

FormPresentImperative
tu (informal)tu parlesparle !
nous (let's)nous parlonsparlons !
vous (formal/plural)vous parlezparlez !
For -er verbs (and aller), drop the final -s from the 'tu' form: 'tu manges → mange !', 'tu vas → va !'.

Être and avoir — irregular

Memorize these.
