What you’ll learn
The futur proche is the simplest way to talk about the future in French. It's the equivalent of English 'I'm going to…' — just conjugate 'aller' and add the infinitive of the main verb.
Explanation
The formula
subject + aller (conjugated) + infinitive.
| Subject | aller | + infinitive |
|---|---|---|
| je | vais | manger |
| tu | vas | partir |
| il/elle/on | va | travailler |
| nous | allons | voyager |
| vous | allez | venir |
| ils/elles | vont | arriver |
- Je vais manger. — I'm going to eat.
- Elle va partir demain. — She's going to leave tomorrow.
- Nous allons visiter Paris. — We're going to visit Paris.
Negation
Put 'ne...pas' around the conjugated 'aller', NOT around the infinitive.
- Je ne vais pas sortir ce soir. — I'm not going to go out tonight.
- Ils ne vont pas venir. — They're not going to come.
With time markers
Often used with: demain, ce soir, la semaine prochaine, dans deux heures, bientôt.
